Pep Band: Pep Band is an
extracurricular activity open to all band students. Rehearsals are held once a
week in the evening. The band plays for the home basketball games, pep
assemblies and travels to play at the Southeast Region V Basketball Tournament.
Concerts: All the band groups
perform at concerts held several times a year at the high school auditorium.
Attendance is required as part of the student's grade. These concerts are open
to the public to provide an opportunity for community members to enjoy the
musical performances as well as giving the student musicians a broader
audience.
Community Performances: Students
may also have the opportunity to perform for other community events. This is
usually the Jazz Band or small ensembles.
Honor Bands:
S. E. Honor
Fest: Music students submit a tape recording of themselves
for evaluation and selection to attend Honor Fest. It is held in one of the
small communities in Southeast Alaska in late October.
All State Music Festival: Student's
may also submit a tape for evaluation for selection to participate in the state
level festival held in Anchorage in November.
All Northwest Music: Every other
year students have the opportunity to submit tapes to be selected for the All
Northwest Band, which performs at the meeting of MENC, a national music
educators organization.
S. E. Alaska Music Fest: In April
each year the music departments of the high schools in Southeast Alaska get
together for three days of musical performances and clinics. The site rotates
between Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka. The bands, choirs and orchestras all
participate. Students may also perform solos and/or play in small ensembles.
All are adjudicated by professionals and given comments on their performance to
help improve the quality of their music.
Special Trips: One of the band
groups may have an opportunity to travel to a major event based on the
director's assessment of the group and interest by students and parents.
